aegan and I both came from ranching backgrounds, and in September of 1993, left
the big city to return to our country roots. Having grown up in Lockhart, Texas we hoped
to also raise our two children,
Jacob and Taylor, in this small town environment. Today, the
heart of the  Double Diamond and home, sit on family land once ranched by Raegan's grandfather,
William Nolte. The Double Diamonds themselves are a tribute to William and his wife Mary -
the M and W, when placed on top of one another, create the two diamonds that represent
the Double Diamond Ranch.
My background in cattle was also strongly influenced by my grandfather, Charlie McKean,
one time Hereford rancher, who still regularly stops by to give us his valued opinion of our
seedstock. Let's just say the cattle genes were in us and I guess there was never a question
of would we own cattle, just when and what breed.
The first group of cows to graze the pastures here was a small group of French Simmentals
purchased in partnership with Raegan's parents from a family friend. Their docile dispositions
were enjoyed by the Freys, including the youngest Taylor, who at 2 enjoyed
feeding each and every one of them through the fence. When Raegan and I decided to purchase a herd
of our own we chose to stay with Simmentals but chose fullbloods as opposed to the purebreds we had
been working with. The final step in finding our niche in the Simmental business was the purchase
of a Full Flechvieh Simmental bull, BHR Mr. Shogun, from Buzzard Hollow Ranch in the spring of 1998. We
knew from the moment he came home that full-fleck was what we wanted and every purchase
since has been based on building our Full-Flechvieh herd.
